Our team had a fantastic morning welcoming new students to the Burnie City Youth Council.
Honestly – we don’t know who is more excited about this year’s Youth Council, the Burnie Works teamies or the students!
The Youth Councillors were welcomed by Nikki (Burnie Works) and Deputy Mayor Giovanna Simpson (Burnie City Council). We got to know each other, shared food and had a tour of the Council offices.
Nikki facilitated a group discussion about:
- What the students already know about Youth Council
- What they wonder about
- What they hope to achieve this year
Straight off the bat they listed these three things as their HOPES.
- Make a positive impact in Burnie
- Learn about Local Government
- Strengthen the Youth Community
Wow!
The group started to work on some other questions to get their thoughts on paper.
- I wish that ….
- I want to …. because
- Things I love about pataway / Burnie
By the end of the session, we had pages of fantastic thoughts, observations and ideas to get us started on the business of Youth Council 2023.
At its next meeting, the Youth Councillors will elect a Youth Mayor (grade 10 student) and Senior Deputy Mayor (grade 10 student) and Junior Deputy Mayor (grade 6 student).
We can’t wait to see what the Youth Council will achieve this year.
