Burnie Works is excited to launch the ‘Every Day Counts’ campaign for 2023.
The ‘Every Day Counts’ campaign is a Burnie Works’ initiative to contribute to improving student attendance at school through a shared commitment by students, parents, caregivers, schools and the community.
School attendance in Tasmanian schools has dropped over the past two years. In October 2022, the Australian Senate Education and Employment References Committee announced an inquiry into the national trend affecting primary and secondary school-aged children who are unable to attend school regularly or on a consistent basis.
Burnie Works is committed to working with our partners and community to improve this situation for our young people during 2023.
In the closing days of the 2022 school term, students from numerous Burnie schools were busy working with us to produce an advertisement to kick off the 12-month campaign.
The Burnie Works team had talked with The Burnie City Youth Council about the importance of going to school every day. Students gave feedback on the reasons why they thought school attendance had dropped and how they felt about it. Their ideas and feedback inspired the messaging for the advertisement which launched today. The message they have for their peers is “When you’re not here, we all miss out”. This message gives us an insight to how students feel when their classmates don’t come to school.
Burnie Works’ Chair Chris Lynch said, “There is no doubt that students have a better chance at success in life if they turn up to school every day. That’s why the ‘Every Day Counts’ campaign will be so vital this year – it will convey the importance of school attendance in a way that means something to students and their families.”
“On behalf of Burnie Works I would like to thank the students for their excellent work on this project and we look forward to working with students, parents, caregivers, schools and the community on the campaign throughout 2023.”
We will soon be putting a call out for interested schools, organisations and community members to join a working group to help us as we implement the campaign and activities throughout the year. When the community gets involved, Burnie Works.
