Youth Making Changes Around Burnie (YMCAB)
The primary purpose of YMCAB when it first came to fruition, facilitated by the Youth Development Officer at the Burnie City Council was to organise, facilitate and generate awesomeness for young people in Burnie. In 2020, a restructure in council saw changes in the way youth engagement was carried out in the community and Burnie Works became a champion for youth voice, supporting Youth Council and YMCAB.
Moving forward YMCAB will retain its online presence and make an effort to reach out to existing youth networks and organisations working with youth. The platform provides a sounding board and brainstorming group for all things youth related for Burnie, supported by the Burnie City Council.
There’s plenty more that this group could do though, for example, if you’ve got a particular passion or cause that you’d like to raise the profile of, YMCAB would be a great place to start!
YMCAB has organised:
- Running pool parties and music gigs
- Fundraising for Burnie’s community defibrillator
- Volunteering at Sk8 Jam
- Assisting with the development of a Youth Health Card for north west Tasmania
- Underage rages;
- Coordinating sports days with Kommunity Kids
It is free to be involved in YMCAB – all we ask is the investment of your time.
YMCAB doesn’t require a year round commitment. We recognise that you’re probably already managing study, work and social lives so what time you can contribute is more than enough.
